He attended Primary school in Namibia and from grade 4 at ellerton primary and high school at sea point high, and finished high school in 2007. Patrick is now busy with his National Diploma at cape peninsula university of technology. Patrick would love to return back to Congo and do some business there, His reason for leaving Congo in the first place was for better education, and because of the War.

Design Philosophy
Principle Concerns - Patrick likes working with caps and frames, enamelling, Resin work and would prefer using these techniques instead of repousse, which he doesn't really like.
Attitude to design - His attitude towards design is very bold, He likes creating big pieces, exploring different patterns and textures. He also loves pieces with nice clean lines and creating contrast in his pieces.

Themes
-He draws inspiration from big bold things. Architecture is where he mainly gets his inspiration form, for his ten piece theme Patrick combines Architecture with floral patterns to create jewellery for women that is bold but feminine.

Caps and frames earring with textuure on top and garnet stones set in each one, this is a design from his ten piece project where he used architecture and floral patterns as inspiration.

This is also one of his ten piece project pieces, one of  my favourites, sterling silver ring, that shows construction, straight lines with floral patterns that gives the piece good contrast.
Aims and aspirations
- Things that inspire him.
HIs Parents, " They Worked so hard for me to be where I am today." He gets inspired by Images, buildings , what he also is inspired by is his country, because of the minerals they have there that was taken away. and the fact that there isn't a thing like a jeweller there.

Influences
- Jewellers that patrick is inspired by, Jacob the jeweller, Laurent, Phillippe Tournaine , Joshua Dermont, IKer Ortiz

Irma Stern The Artist

Irma Stern

Irma Stern was born in 1894 Schweiser – Reneke , a small town in South Africa and passed away in Cape town on August 23, 1966. When the war started they moved back to Germany and stayed there until 1920, with constant travel, all the travel influenced Irma’s work. Irma wasn’t recognized as an artist until the 1940’s. In 1926 Irma got married to Dr Johannes Prinz the marriage didn’t really last long because they got a divorce in 1934. Irma travelled a lot she visited various places like the Congo region, Spain, Italy, Paris, Zanzibar, Berlin and more. These trips open the doors to creativity, she got great ideas for her painting, she also collected artifacts from the different places she visited, they became part of her life.  She was an amazing artist that’s why I chose her for my case study.

Her parents bought her a house in 1927 in Cape town named “The Firs” in Rosebank. She lived there until the day she died. That house then became the Irma Stern Museum in 1971. This house is located in Chapel Road, Rosebank, Cape Town. She surrounded herself with the artifacts that she collected when she travelled. Her tastes were catholic. But her eye was faultless. Which you can see from her fine collection of African carvings, masks and textiles. I went here in 2007 when I did my foundation course in art and design at Cput. The house is just so amazing, a house of a true artist I used one of her pantings as inspiration for a project where we had to use the same colors and technique from the painting we have chosen but instead of doing the same person she painted do one of ourselves. I loved working on this project.
Her Studio

The one I did

Irma had a love for colour.

Her way of working in her studio demanded concentration, she use to put a do not disturb sign and continued working while chain smoking and drinking strong black coffee, She loved doing things herself she did the framing of her work, to exhibitions to arranging  sales for her pieces.

Use of material

She worked in a range of materials including, oils, water color, gouache, charcoal, as well as ceramics and sculpture.

One of her techniques was to sometimes use thick paint applied with a knife, to create emotion in her paintings, she painted landscapes, portraits, figure, still life’s.

How Irma would market herself was with exhibitions, she held them in different places for example, Germany, Berlin, Venice Biennale, Johannesburg, cape town, and many more

How this is relevant to my work, Art classes is how my life started, I started drawing when I was in Primary school, we didn’t have art classes in school so I use to draw picture for my mom. She heard about this artist Suzette laten who teaches art. So I started going there when I was in grade 8 .When I started there, it was one day a week after school, I couldn’t wait for that day every week that’s how much I loved it. Before I started there I didn’t realize that this was the sort of thing I want to do. But since I went there I just knew. So here’s a few pictures of how it all started I admit they aren’t great. So Irma’s work influences me, to not just look at one thing for inspiration, and just do what I love.

2002-2003
I believe Irma was an artist who saw beauty in every place and everything she saw.
How Irma market’s herself now is she left the world but her artworks and home remain here. With her museum in Cape town.

International Jewellery Designer

Lucy Folk
International jewellery designer
Lucy’s inspiration board in her studio….

Lucy Folk is a Jewellery designer she lives in Melbourne and shares her studio with gallery-cum-retail jewellery workshop piece of eight. When she was a child she spent a lot of time in her fathers cafe, where she loved to make jewelry out of pieces of macaroni and cherries. She graduated with a major in Gold and Silver smiting. Lucy returned to Australia in 2005 to launch her range of food inspired jewelry. Lucy’s work is really different to what you expect to see, but it's that difference that makes her work so exciting. She is a real inspiration to me and to my future, I want to make jewelry that excites people, and she does that. Her designs is not what you would expect, by turning things that are meant to be eaten into jewelry, " Lucy’s “bling” pendants have been spotted on rapper Snoop Dogg and British Singer Lily Allen, when she was in Melbourne, she was given on of Lucy’s farfalle necklaces by fuzzy on video hits. Lucy was nominated in 2009 as ‘Accessory designer of the year’ by
Marie Claire Magazine." (1)

Lucy Folk is one of the original members of the Piece of Eight workshop. She has a fun way of her work, she knows what she likes and she uses those things. Her newest range is a pasta collection. Her inspiration for the new pasta collection was as the days and nights get colder. She turned to comfort food such as pasta, she loves to eat pasta those cold days because it puts a smile on her face. She sees it as a great way to celebrate the cooler months then with a new collection of jewelry that she directly casts from rigatoni, farfalle and silver wire, fashioned into spaghetti rings and bangles. What she finds inspiring is colour and texture and an amazing meal, and types of food she likes etc.

Farfalle and Ruby Necklace, oxidised Sterling Silver $455

Rigatoni necklace, Sterling Silver $450

Rigatoni bangle with 18ct gold plating $275

Lucy uses materials metals like, silver, gold and platinum with  custom made creations with precious of stones like diamonds, rubies and sapphires. For all their refinement, Lucy's jewelry shows of her humour and wit.

Lucy hard at work….

What Lucy finds rewarding about making jewelry, she says, "it’s being able to wear her own creations and create new pieces to add to her collection. And the joy of seeing people who appreciate her work for its humour and fellow foodies who wear it with pride."(2)
How I think all this is relevant to me and what I love to do is, Lucy takes something she loves and changes it into something beautiful, and gets joy out of it, by seeing how happy people are when wearing her jewellery. She’s not just a jeweler she’s an artist, her work is fun and brings joy.I want that i want that to relate to my jewelry, i want to work with materials i love, textures, colors, shapes. Thinking in this way helped finding my theme for my ten piece project. I chose a theme that i love designing with, the ideas doesn't stop coming, there is so much you can do with just one idea, the directions you can go with  a good idea is endless. I fell inlove with her work the moment i saw one of her pieces on the internet. She doesn't look at being a designer as work she sees it as taking things she loves and creating amazing things. That's how it should be for a designer, just have fun, from the point of designing to the actual manufacture. Just have fun, love what you do.

Design- Piece of Art by Shawn Lovell

Question, Is this Art or Furniture
- A dreamy piece of art you can sleep on.

Design-Insect Jewelry

This is a really interesing piece, not alot of people like insects, including me, but it gives you the "wow" effect. If you are into steampunk and gothic this is something for you. These insect jewellery are reminiscent of art movements such as art nouveau, retro and are quite steampunk and gothic in nature. It's made out of gold, platinum, and diamond. I like this piece because it's not boring at all and really interesting.
